Lesson 1 Assignment

I signed up for this class because I recently purchased my first DSLR camera and would like to learn more about photography techniques and ideas in order to better my skills. In an ideal world, I would like to use these skills to shoot children and families in the Las Vegas area. I really look forward to hearing critique and hopefully bettering myself! For this assignment I chose a pen that sits on my kitchen counter next to the calendar. I tried to look at it from a different angle and really focus on the most interesting part of it.

You've done well here on your first assignment. Most of the time I'm not really a fan of using the flash for images of this nature but in this case I think it works.

You can clearly see just how much more interesting your close up photograph is. This assignment is really important because you can do this in almost any situation. You can almost always improve a photograph by asking yourself the question "how can I make this more interesting".

In this specific case you've done a few things that are great. You've gotten close, you've used shallow depth of field, and you've desaturated the image. All of which makes for a more interesting photograph of a pen.

Now just think, if you can make a pen more interesting what about everything else?!
