Great shot. I love seeing students experiment with depth, shape and composition in this way. It’s not necessarily right over other types of “flatter photography”, but it’s important to know about so you can make the right decision for yourself under various photographic conditions.

I love the trees in the background of this image. They almost look painted. The horizon line is placed at a great location and your water and shore layers are also very well placed and create shapes which help divide the photograph up into easily distinguishable layers.

Although, technically nothing is wrong with this photograph I want to make you away of an illumination idea that many landscape and outdoor portrait photographers use. They illuminate the foreground using a flash fill to fill in some of the shadows of the foreground object and bring out the textures and details. This usually results in very unique lighting outcomes, that if done correctly most audiences and photographers really enjoy looking at.

Hopefully overtime you’ll invest in your photographer’s toolbox. In that toolbox one your purchases should include a manual flash kit. You can see the outcome of both a portrait photograph and a macro photograph as well as read more about this technique here.

Overall great work!
