I tried to merge in this picture a lighter background (the mountain) taken with a shorter aperture with a darker foreground (the woods and harbour) taken with a longer aperture so that the output would have a more homogenous feel. I found it hard though to smoothen the connection between the two (it still appears as a copy paste and not as one photo I am afraid).

This was a good attempt but it doesn't feel right.

If you're trying to merge images that are at different dynamic ranges I recommend you try to create what's known as an HDR image.
