Wow.
This is my favourite of all of your assignments so far. This photograph is great both technically and artistically.
Let me begin by pointing out some of the highlights of this photograph. For starters, this assignment asked you to find tonal range in a natural setting. You’ve accomplished that perfectly.You have very bright highlights and also very dark shadows. That ensures this black and white photograph is dramatic and doesn’t appear flat.
Artistically it is also very interesting to look at because the textures of the mountains, sand and water. All of these things provide an interesting, yet simple texture for your photograph. This allows you to include a lot of space in your photograph without allowing the image to become distracting. Even though there is a lot going on in this photograph, the viewer’s eyes are immediately drawn towards the characters on the beach.
You’ve done a great job with this photograph. You’ve incorporated many of the elements from previous lessons (composition, rule of thirds, depth, object organization, textures, lines and simplicity to name a few elements) and you’ve incorporated them into this photograph as if they are becoming second nature to you.
