Now onto your critique…
First and foremost I’d like to congratulate you for taking action and signing up for the photography school. You’ve taken concrete action toward becoming a better photographer.
In this first assignment I’ve tried to get you to see the world like a photographer does.
You’ve certainly found a mundane object here.
That light is quite boring on it’s own and you’ve made a little less boring through your photograph. Albeit there is certainly room to improve.
Right off the bat you should know that photographing a light in this fashion presents a serious challenge. Namely that the light source is very strong and the darker part of the image is very dark.
This is what’s known as dynamic range:
As humans our eyes have remarkable dynamic range. Much greater than a camera.
So just know that it’s tough to shoot this type of thing well. I like that you’ve gotten close (hopefully not by zooming, it’s always better to get closer by walking)
I also like that that you’ve just started. Starting is so important.
You’ve chosen a tough subject to shoot for your first assignment.
