Whatever you do, you should establish some kind of presence online.
Own your own website and domain and do something with it. I sell a few photographs every few days which is nice.
It all depends on what you are trying to achieve though but you need an online presence no matter what you do.
That said photoshelter is expensive but they handle everything.
