Great images. Both capture exactly what was asked of you for this assignment. The bird photograph uses a shallow depth of field which helps isolate the main subject from the background. It also helps make the distracting components of the photograph less noticeable.

The image of the swimmer is great because you’ve frozen the movement of not only the man, but also the water being thrown off his hands. You’ve done this without compromising the exposure of the shot. Great work.

My only concern with the first image is that you’ve “amputated” (i.e. cut off) the legs of the bird with the bottom wall of the photograph. Amputation is likely the most common mistake that photographers make. It’s important to examine the 4 walls of your photograph before taking the picture to ensure you’ve included everything you want to include and exclude everything you don’t think helps advance your story. In this case cutting out the birds feet seems accidental. By including them the photograph you would help complete the image by including all of the necessary features of your main object. Although amputation is sometimes required, a general rule of thumb is never to cut on the limbs of animals or people.
