Great work with this assignment. Our hopes were that you would accomplish 2 things. First, that you would successfully find a natural environment with a limited color palette consisting of gradients of a narrow range of hues.

Secondly, our hope was that you would move beyond macro photography into experimenting with playing with a larger geographic space. You’ve accomplished both of those things beautifully!

You’ve chosen to work with the color palette of red and blue. The color gradients in the photograph range from light orange to the beginnings of violet. This mixing of colors is quite dramatic since the colors are complimentary (i.e. on opposite side of the color wheel).

The lights on the leaves helps draw out the texture in this photograph making it appear 3 dimensional. It’s hard to tell what the direction of this lighting was because of the nature of the object, but the bark of the tree also appears to be full of texture, so it’s unfortunate that the light wasn’t a bit more directional (i.e. side lit) to help draw out some of that texture as well.

What you’ve done isn’t wrong, you’ve just placed your visual priority on the leaves of the tree.

Overall, great assignment. Great framing, great colors and great texture. Well done.
