Both images are very strong. Great work.
From a technical standpoint, both images have a lot going for them. They not only use varying degrees of a shallow depth of field, but they both have a strong sense of object layers. You have very distinct foregrounds, middle grounds and backgrounds which helps add to the illusion of 3 dimensions in photography.
Not only that, but you’ve kept enough of the context in both shots to help not only give a sense of place, but also help advance your story and compliment the overall tone of the shot.
Most impressively however, was your ability capture what appears to be a candid moment. The eyes of both your subjects tell an entire story themselves. Both images appear very natural and intimate in the sense that the subjects seem to have put their guard down and let you emotionally “in” even though you had a camera present.
Both images are also very rich with texture. The tree bark, is strongly contrasted with the softness of skin. In the first photograph the fabric of the boy’s clothes are so well captured that the audience gets the impression that they know what that fabric feels like.
You’ve stimulated more than just the visual senses with these two photographs. Great work!
