This is exactly what we were hoping you’d accomplish with this assignment. You’ve used the same environment to create 2 strikingly different photographs.
You’ve done three major things that have helped you design a much better composition. In no particular order they are
1: Limit your color palette using complementary colors on opposite ends of the color wheel. This helps give the image the dramatic high contrast look.
2: You’ve also incorporated a strong sense of depth by using a strong foreground object. Even though your “beast” photograph uses more depth, your “beauty” image gives the illusion of a stronger sense of depth. Using a strong foreground object helps you create the illusion of 3 dimensions.
3. You’ve cleaned up the 4 walls of your photograph. In your “beast” image, your compositions suffers from major amputation (i.e. cutting off of primary and secondary objects) around the 4 edges of your frame. Parts of chairs, tables, houses and windows are all thoughtlessly cut off by all 4 edges of your frame. In your “beauty” photograph, there is still amputation, but it’s not distracting and it looks much more strategic.
Lastly, your ‘beast” image doesn’t have a “stopper”. A stopper is an object that your audience’s eye can rest on while it’s not exploring the rest of your photograph. Without a stopper you run the risk of your audience’s eyes coming in to your photograph and then quickly leaving because they have nothing to focus on. Your “beauty” image corrects this image.
