Wow! Great work with this assignment.

With this assignment we wanted to see you experiment with color and space. Specifically, we wanted you to simplify your composition using color. What I really appreciated about your project is that you were brave with your use of space. This is something we love to see from our students. You’ve taken a fairly large geographic space and you’ve managed to find a naturally occurring limited color palette of whites and browns.

The composition uses informal balance which “weights” the image slightly more heavily on the left of the frame. This helps you create a slightly more dramatic appeal to your image.

The color palette is also heavily weighted towards the white / grey colors, leaving the reddish-brown dirt (or rock?) to play more of a role as a highlighting color. Again, this sense of imbalance helps you create a very interesting and dramatic composition. Great work.

While I like the inclusion of the trees as your foreground object, I’m not sure I like their amputation point. I’m not sure how to approach this composition from an alternative angle as I don’t know the environment of this shot, but I would have liked to see a foreground object that interacted with your bottom wall a little better. Cutting a tree off (that’s in sharp focus) half way up is a little distracting to me. It’s not wrong what you’ve done, but at the same time I don’t think it’s optimal. That being said, it may have been the only option you had. Again, I can’t see the full landscape so it’s hard for me to say.

Other than that, this is a wonderful photograph. Very beautiful. Great work!
