A photographer that I truly appreciate is Manuel Alvarez Bravo (Mexican, 1902-2002). He is definitely a master that provides inspiration in portrait photography. I am a close follower of surrealist paintings and even though Bravo was not a formal member of surrealism, his work displays many characteristics of the visual powers of such movement. Bravo “has focused on the subtle ties of human interaction, particularly in the lower classes, to make eloquent images of dreams, death, and transient life”. His portraits also carry a vivid description of the cultural roots of the common people, especially of his country.

The theme of his work is important for me because I am very interested in a photography that can express social and economic realities, as well to provide awareness to others that beauty and dreams can be found in the most unbelievable and poorest places of a white and black world.
