    black and white

    Duncan Rawlinson

    Excellent black and white photograph.

This is exactly what was asked from you for this assignment. You’ve shown your ability to find wide tonal range in a photograph and it doesn’t go unnoticed. While the photograph is undoubtedly a low key photograph, it nevertheless has great placement of the lighter tones. It’s a very exciting photograph to look at.

It has a sloping tonal range meaning you have the largest number of pixels in the darkest of the blacks and the least amount of pixels in the white tones. But remember, tonal balance isn’t important, range is, and you’ve done a great job of that. I’ve actually examined your levels and I’ve added the results as an attachment (see below).

My only recommendation for this image is to play with your horizon line a little more. You have great composition otherwise, but I would have liked to see the home closer to the bottom wall of the photograph (1/3 of the way up). This would allow more room for the trees above the house and make the nature in the photograph look “bigger”.

But that’s my only recommendation. Great work!
