This is my picture for lesson 6.

    Duncan Rawlinson

Thanks for sending in another assignment.

You’ve submitted a nice photograph here. One element that I imeediately noticed was off was the exposure.

The sky is blown out white. This isn’t inherently a problem if this is the look you wanted but I feel it detracts from the image. If you’re metering automatically you camera might have taken it’s reading off the pile of wood.

Either way this is a minor point and you can work on your exposures later. Just be aware of how you camera does it’s light metering. Is it center weighted or is it the average of the whole frame? etc…

In terms of simplification the tree in the background certainly adds a layer of complexity to the frame.

Here are a couple of photos that could be of inspiration to you with this type of subject:

hatchet by Robert S. Donovan, on Flickr

    Untitled by paalia, on Flickr

    IMGP4399 by priittammets, on Flickr

All three of these images used simplification with the same subject matter as you.

I hope this lesson was of value to you.

Just remember, simplify your frame with both the elements in the frame and the color of the frame and your pictures will get better!!!
