TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is a high-quality lossless image format widely used in professional photography, printing, and archival work. Unlike JPEG, which discards data to reduce file size, TIFF preserves every pixel of information captured by your camera.

What Makes TIFF Special

TIFF files store images without compression loss, making them ideal when quality cannot be compromised. When you edit a RAW file and want to preserve all your adjustments before creating final outputs, TIFF serves as your high-quality intermediate format.

The format supports 16-bit color depth per channel, compared to JPEG’s 8-bit limitation. This extra bit depth captures subtle gradations in tone and color that become crucial when making aggressive edits. You can push shadows, recover highlights, and adjust colors with minimal banding or posterization.

When to Use TIFF

Professional print workflows rely heavily on TIFF. When sending images to a print lab or preparing photos for publication, TIFF ensures maximum quality throughout the production pipeline. The format also excels for archival purposes, as its lossless nature means your images won’t degrade through repeated saves.

If you’re creating layered composites in Photoshop, TIFF can preserve those layers for future editing. While PSD files serve this purpose too, TIFF offers broader compatibility across different software applications.

The Tradeoff: File Size

Quality comes at a cost. A single TIFF image from a modern camera can easily reach 100-200 MB, compared to 5-15 MB for equivalent JPEG files. This impacts storage requirements and makes TIFF impractical for web delivery or sharing via email.

TIFF supports optional LZW or ZIP compression, which reduces file size without losing quality. However, compressed TIFFs still dwarf JPEG equivalents and may encounter compatibility issues with older software.

TIFF in Modern Workflows

Many photographers use a hybrid approach: shoot in RAW, edit to perfection, then save a master TIFF for archival and a JPEG for delivery. This preserves maximum editing flexibility while maintaining practical file sizes for everyday use.

Understanding proper color profile settings becomes especially important with TIFF, as the format can embed profiles like Adobe RGB or ProPhoto RGB that preserve wider color gamuts than standard sRGB JPEG files.

For photographers serious about print quality or long-term preservation, TIFF remains the gold standard despite its bulk.
