Time-Lapse & Hyperlapse Quiz

A time-lapse captures individual frames at long intervals and plays them back at a standard frame rate, so hours or days of slow change, clouds moving, flowers opening, shadows rotating, compress into seconds of viewable motion.

A hyperlapse combines the time compression of a time-lapse with physical camera movement between frames. The camera travels a significant distance during the sequence, creating a moving perspective that sweeps through a location while simultaneously compressing time.

An intervalometer triggers the shutter at a user-set time interval, typically measured in seconds, minutes, or hours. It automates the repetitive capture required for time-lapses and star trails without the photographer needing to press the shutter manually for each frame.

In video, motion blur on each frame is essential for smooth playback. The 180-degree shutter rule sets the shutter speed to approximately twice the frame rate, which allows enough subject motion during each exposure to create natural-looking blur between frames.

In a time-lapse, small frame to frame changes in exposure or white balance show up as flickering brightness or color on playback. Auto modes make those adjustments constantly, so they cause flicker. Locking manual exposure and white balance is the fix, not the cause.

The camera closes the aperture for each frame, and tiny mechanical differences in where it stops cause brightness to flicker. With a manual aperture lens, or a lens twisted slightly off its contacts while stopped down, the aperture stays fixed for the whole sequence. Changing the f-stop every shot makes flicker worse.

A holy grail time-lapse captures the transition between full daylight and full darkness, or vice versa, over the course of an hour or more. The challenge is that ambient brightness changes by many stops, requiring gradual automated adjustments to exposure settings throughout the sequence.

A hyperlapse moves the camera between frames, so it needs one fixed point in the scene to frame and focus on every time. Lining each frame up on that point keeps the subject steady while the surroundings sweep past. The sky or the ground gives no stable anchor for the motion.

Warp stabilizer analyzes the motion path of the camera in each frame and applies a counteracting geometric transformation to remove or reduce jitter. It works by cropping the frame slightly and repositioning it so that stationary elements appear locked across successive frames.

24 frames per second is the frame rate associated with the look of cinematic film. 30 frames per second is common for broadcast video and screen content. Both rates are fast enough that individual frames are not perceived as discrete images during normal playback.
