Zone System Quiz – Master Exposure Control Theory

The zone system uses eleven zones numbered zero through ten, each separated by one stop of exposure. Zone zero is pure black with no detail; zone ten is pure white with no detail. Each zone between represents a specific tonal range from deep shadow through middle grey to bright highlight.

Camera meters are calibrated to render any metered surface as Zone V, which is middle grey with approximately 18 percent reflectance. This calibration works well for scenes that average to middle grey but consistently errs for subjects significantly lighter or darker than that value.

The meter reads the white wall's high reflectance and calculates that less exposure is needed to render the scene as middle grey. The resulting exposure underexposes the wall by roughly two to three stops relative to its actual brightness, turning it grey in the image.

Light is the foundation of every image. Hard light creates sharp shadows and contrast; soft light wraps around and minimizes wrinkles. Knowing how to read light and position yourself or modify it is more important than any technical setting.

Shadows define form and add dimension to an image. Dark shadows increase contrast and drama; open shadows (with fill light) preserve detail. Shadows tell the viewer where light is coming from and how the scene is lit.

The photographer meters a specific important tone in the scene, decides which zone that tone should occupy in the final image, and calculates how many stops above or below the meter reading are needed to place it there. All other tones in the scene shift proportionally from that placement.

Green grass in full sun has a reflectance close to 18 percent, which is the target that camera meters are calibrated for. When the subject to be metered is already near Zone V, the meter's reading requires no adjustment, and the suggested settings will render it accurately.

A histogram is a graph of tones in your image, from dark on the left to bright on the right. It shows where your exposure sits and helps you catch blown highlights or crushed shadows before you leave the scene. Learning to read a histogram removes guesswork from exposure.

Exposing to the right uses the fact that digital sensors capture cleaner data in brighter tones. By pushing exposure up to place the histogram data as far right as possible without clipping the most important highlights, the photographer maximises the signal-to-noise ratio in shadows and midtones, reducing noise when the image is processed.

The zone system develops the habit of looking at a scene and mentally mapping its brightness values to specific tonal zones before pressing the shutter. This previsualization, the term Adams used, shifts exposure from a reactive guess to a deliberate decision about how each tonal area will appear in the final image.
