Crystal Ball Photography Quiz – Refraction and Creative Techniques

Light is the foundation of every image. Hard light creates sharp shadows and contrast; soft light wraps around and minimizes wrinkles. Knowing how to read light and position yourself or modify it is more important than any technical setting.

Aperture controls how much light reaches the sensor during the exposure. It works the same way whether your light is coming from the room, sunlight, or a flash. Wider apertures gather more light and create shallower depth of field; smaller apertures gather less light and deepen the zone of sharpness.

Focus is the act of aligning the lens optics so that light from your subject converges on the sensor. A subject in focus appears sharp; a subject out of focus appears blurred. Choosing which part of the scene is in focus is one of your most powerful tools for guiding the viewer's eye.

A crystal ball between 60 and 80 millimetres offers enough interior volume to contain a recognisable refracted image, is portable enough to carry and position easily, and is large enough to appear substantial in a photograph. Smaller balls contain too little scene; larger balls are heavy and awkward.

A crystal ball inverts and miniaturises the scene refracted through it. Strong graphic elements, distinct colours, and recognisable landmarks remain identifiable when reduced in scale. Featureless or soft subjects lose all character when compressed into the small spherical image inside the ball.

A smooth glass sphere has no friction with a flat surface and will roll with the slightest slope or vibration. A ring or small cradle holds the ball securely at the intended position, allowing both hands to be free for camera operation.

A glass sphere refracts light in a way that inverts the image inside it, presenting the scene upside down. Rotating the captured image 180 degrees in editing corrects this inversion so the refracted scene inside the ball reads with normal orientation relative to the surroundings.

A moderate telephoto focal length fills more of the frame with the ball while reducing the apparent size of the background outside it. Wide-angle focal lengths make the ball appear small relative to the background, drawing attention away from the refracted image inside.

A smooth, reflective surface beneath the ball creates a mirror image of the ball and its refracted contents. This reflection creates a compositional symmetry and extends the visual interest of the image below the ball in a way that a flat mat surface cannot.
