Lens Buying Quiz – Choose the Right Lens for Your Camera

Camera bodies are updated regularly and depreciate quickly when newer models are released. Lenses maintain their optical performance across body generations and retain more of their value in the used market. A sharp, well-corrected lens delivers the image quality that ultimately determines the photograph.

The maximum aperture is the widest the lens can open, such as f/1.8 or f/4. A wider maximum aperture lets in more light, allowing faster shutter speeds in dim conditions, and allows a shallower depth of field. It says nothing about zoom range or how close the lens focuses.

Keeping a wide aperture like f/2.8 at every focal length of a zoom requires larger glass elements and a more complex optical design. That adds cost, size, and weight. Variable aperture zooms use simpler optics and let the aperture narrow as you zoom in.

Portraits benefit most from a fast prime in the 50mm to 85mm range. A wide aperture like f/1.8 blurs the background to separate the subject and works well in low light. That focal range also keeps facial features natural, unlike an ultra-wide that distorts faces.

Each camera maker uses its own mount, the physical and electronic connection between lens and body. A lens must be made for that mount, or used with a suitable adapter, to attach and communicate with the camera. Lenses do not fit every camera.

Independent lens makers design lenses for several camera mounts. They often offer optical quality close to or matching the camera maker's own lenses for less money. They are not always sharper or always weather sealed; quality varies by lens.

The glass and focusing are what make a lens useful. Fungus, deep scratches, or haze inside the lens can lower contrast and sharpness and are costly or impossible to fix, and rough or noisy autofocus can signal a failing motor. The box and paperwork matter far less.

An f/4 zoom is one stop slower than the f/2.8 version but is usually much lighter, smaller, and cheaper. For landscape, travel, or daylight shooting, that extra stop is rarely needed, and image quality is often just as good. The f/4 is not automatically sharper, just easier to carry and buy.

Minimum focus distance is the closest point at which the lens can still focus sharply. A short minimum focus distance lets you get closer to small subjects and fill the frame with detail. Anything nearer than that distance will stay blurred.

Buying one or two versatile lenses first lets you learn what you actually shoot. Once you notice a real limit, such as needing more reach or a wider aperture, you can buy the lens that fixes it. Buying everything at once often wastes money on lenses you rarely use.
