Color Management Quiz: ICC Profiles, sRGB & Adobe RGB

A color space defines the gamut, the specific range of colors a file can describe, and how its numbers map to real colors. sRGB, Adobe RGB and ProPhoto RGB differ in how wide that range is. It does not control noise, sharpness or the sensor's exposure range.

sRGB matches the color gamut that web browsers and most consumer screens use by default. Files outside this gamut can display unpredictably online, so converting to sRGB before sharing or uploading avoids color shifts on other viewers' screens.

Adobe RGB has a wider gamut than sRGB, encompassing more greens and cyans. It is useful when printing to devices that can reproduce those colors, but it needs a color-managed workflow to avoid incorrect display on sRGB screens.

An uncalibrated monitor shows colors and brightness values that may differ significantly from what other calibrated devices display. Editing on an uncalibrated screen produces results that look correct locally but shift on other displays and in print.

An ICC profile describes how a device or working space maps colors to actual light or ink values. Color management software uses profiles to translate colors accurately between capture, screen, and print, each of which has a different native color behavior.

Soft proofing applies a simulation of a printer profile directly in your editing application, showing how colors will shift when converted for that specific paper and ink combination. It reveals problems before expensive test prints are made.

A monitor set too bright makes images look lighter than they are, so the editor darkens them to compensate. When those darkened files reach a calibrated output device or printer, they appear too dark. Calibrating the monitor to a standard luminance target prevents this mismatch.

White balance corrects the color of the light in the scene so that neutral objects look neutral. Color management is a separate step that makes the same file look the same on different screens and printers, using profiles. One fixes the image's color; the other keeps it consistent across devices.

Web browsers display images in sRGB by default. Exporting in sRGB as JPEG ensures colors render consistently across browsers and platforms without requiring color management software on the viewer's end.

ProPhoto RGB encompasses nearly all colors a camera sensor can capture and many that current monitors cannot display. It is used internally during editing to preserve maximum color data, then converted to a narrower space for delivery.

Wide-gamut color spaces contain values that fall outside what standard displays can show. A color-managed application interprets the profile correctly and maps values to visible colors; an unmanaged app may display them shifted or incorrectly saturated.

A calibration target is a physical reference chart with precisely measured color patches. Photographing it and comparing the result to known values lets software calculate a correction profile that compensates for the camera's or scanner's color bias.

When converting between color spaces, out-of-gamut colors need to be mapped to the nearest reproducible value. Perceptual rendering compresses the whole gamut proportionally to preserve relationships; relative colorimetric shifts only the out-of-gamut colors, leaving in-gamut colors unchanged.

When a file looks different in a browser than in an editor, the usual cause is a missing or different color profile, or a viewer that ignores profiles. Exporting in sRGB with the profile embedded fixes most cases. Resolution and camera settings do not change colors on screen.

Color management uses profiles to translate colors from one device to another, so an image looks the same on your monitor, a client's screen and a print. The goal is accuracy and consistency, not maximum saturation.
