The best action photographers succeed because of anticipation, not quick reflexes alone. Reading the flow of action and predicting what will happen next lets you position the camera in advance. Reflexes are fast, but anticipation is faster.

At the apex of a jump, the peak of a wave, or the moment of maximum stretch in a sports gesture, kinetic energy briefly appears suspended. This apex, where motion appears to pause, is visually the most powerful and unambiguous moment to freeze.

Fast action needs a short exposure to stop movement. Shutter speeds from about 1/500 to 1/2000 second freeze most sports and moving subjects. 1/125 to 1/250 second is usually too slow and leaves blur in hands, feet and balls.

Subjects in action keep changing distance from the camera. Continuous autofocus (AF-C or AI Servo) keeps refocusing while the button is held, tracking the subject. Single shot autofocus locks focus once and loses the subject as soon as it moves.

Panning tracks a moving subject by rotating the camera to follow it during a slow exposure. The subject, moving with the camera's rotation, records with relative sharpness while the background, stationary relative to the camera's movement, smears into horizontal streaks that convey speed.

A moving subject should have space ahead of it, in the direction it is heading. That lead room gives the motion somewhere to go and makes the frame feel balanced. A subject crowded against the edge it is moving toward feels cut off.

Burst mode increases the number of frames available for selection after the fact, but it does not identify the peak moment: the photographer still needs to anticipate where and when action will develop to be pointing at the right place when it happens.

Panning involves your entire body, not just your arms. Twist from the waist, keep your eyes on the subject, and continue the motion after you release the shutter. This follow-through is what keeps the pan smooth and the subject sharp.

Action photography becomes art when it captures emotion: the human moments within the physical action. A sequence of jumps or sprints is documentation; the moment of doubt, triumph, or concentration is art.

1/125 second is a good starting speed for panning with cars because it is slow enough to blur the background yet forgiving enough to keep the vehicle sharp while learning the movement. Slower speeds such as 1/30 give more blur but many more misses. At 1/1000 the background is frozen, so there is no sense of speed.
