Panorama and Perspective Quiz: Stitching Techniques

When the camera rotates around a point other than the entrance pupil, near and far objects shift relative to each other between frames. The stitching algorithm cannot reconcile these inconsistencies, producing seams and misaligned edges in the final panorama.

The entrance pupil is the apparent position of the aperture as seen from the front of the lens. Rotating the camera exactly around this point means every frame records the scene from the same optical viewpoint, eliminating positional parallax between near and far subjects.

Distant subjects subtend such small angles that even a slight rotational offset between frames barely changes their relative positions. Close foreground objects move dramatically relative to the background when the camera is not rotated about the correct point.

Stitching software relies on finding common features in overlapping regions between frames. If overlap is insufficient there are too few matching points; if parallax is present the matches are geometrically inconsistent, and the algorithm cannot produce a clean join.

Overlap between adjacent frames gives stitching software enough shared reference points to calculate the correct blend position. Too little overlap leaves gaps or insufficient matches; too much is redundant but not harmful.

A nodal slide moves the camera fore and aft on the tripod head until it is positioned so that horizontal rotation keeps the entrance pupil stationary. Finding this position eliminates parallax for any lens and focal length combination.

Perspective in a portrait depends on where the camera stands. From close up, the nose is much nearer the lens than the ears, so it renders larger; stepping back evens out those ratios. Focal length only decides how much fits in the frame from that spot, which is why a long lens seems to flatter: it makes the photographer stand farther away.

Getting closer puts near features, like the nose, much nearer the lens than the ears, so they render disproportionately large. The wider lens is what lets the face still fit in the frame from that close position, so the combination increases perspective exaggeration. The distortion comes from the short distance, not from the lens itself.

Distance controls perspective. From farther back, the nose and ears are at nearly the same relative distance from the lens, so features keep natural proportions, and a longer focal length then fills the frame from there. Moving close with a wide lens does the opposite and enlarges whatever is nearest the camera.

Tilting the camera up or down places the lens axis at an angle to the horizontal plane. Parallel vertical lines converge toward the direction of tilt because the sensor is no longer parallel to them, the same geometric perspective that makes tall buildings appear to lean.

A tilt-shift lens can move its optics relative to the sensor. Shifting lets the camera stay level, so vertical lines stay parallel, while the frame slides up to include a tall building. Tilting angles the plane of focus, so it can run along a tabletop or road instead of sitting parallel to the sensor.

Keeping the camera level and then correcting vertical converging lines in post-processing straightens the parallels but discards the top or bottom of the frame. Shooting a slightly wider area than needed provides the necessary margin to crop after correction.

A single row of frames captures a wide panorama but limited vertical field. Adding multiple rows, each slightly above or below the previous, builds a wider and taller composite with far more total pixels than a single frame can provide.

Each frame of a panorama has to match its neighbors. If the camera re-meters or re-guesses white balance per frame, the sky can come out brighter or a different tint from one frame to the next, leaving visible bands where they join. Manual exposure and a fixed white balance keep every frame consistent.

Rotating around the entrance pupil ensures near and far objects do not shift relative to each other between frames. Keeping foreground subjects farther away reduces the apparent displacement that would occur even with slight rotation errors.
