The opening image must be strong enough to justify continued engagement, and the navigation must be clear enough that the viewer can immediately access the type of work they are looking for.

Commercial use of an image that includes an identifiable person requires documentation that the person consented to that specific type of use. A model release records that consent in writing, specifying the permitted uses, and provides legal protection to both the photographer and any client who licenses the image.

A price that covers only the time and direct costs of a shoot leaves no margin for equipment depreciation, software subscriptions, insurance, travel, editing time, and the self-employment taxes that apply to business income. Sustainable pricing must account for all these factors to allow the business to continue operating.

A portfolio review gives a photographer direct access to the perspective of experienced professionals who evaluate work as potential collaborators or gatekeepers rather than as casual viewers. Feedback from curators or editors reveals how work is received by the specific audiences whose attention the photographer is trying to attract.
