Photography Portfolio Quiz | Test Your Knowledge

Fifteen to thirty carefully selected images allow a viewer to understand a photographer's range, style, and quality within a manageable viewing experience. Fewer images may not demonstrate enough range; more images dilute the impact and risk including weaker work.

Every image in a portfolio represents a claim about the photographer's minimum standard. A single significantly weaker image sets the floor of quality and leaves the viewer wondering whether the stronger images are typical or exceptional.

The opening image determines whether the viewer continues. It should demonstrate the visual quality and aesthetic sensibility of the entire portfolio in a single frame, compelling the viewer to keep scrolling rather than concluding from the first image alone.

A simple layout with neutral colors and few distractions makes the photos the main thing a visitor sees. Busy designs, many fonts and bright colors compete with the images and can even change how their colors look. Clean pages also tend to load faster.

The right mix depends on who is looking. A potential client wants proof you can do their kind of work, so a focused set in that genre is stronger; a general showcase can show broader range. Many photographers keep separate galleries for each genre.

The order in which images appear shapes the viewer's experience of the whole: rhythm of strong and quiet images, transitions between subjects, and the emotional arc from opening to closing image all affect whether the portfolio feels like a coherent body of work or a random collection.

A portfolio that remains static stops representing the photographer's current capabilities and evolving vision. As your work improves, older images that once seemed strong may no longer represent your standard, and recent work that better reflects your direction should replace them.

Clients and collaborators want to work with a person, not just a camera. An About page that communicates your background, photographic approach, and values gives them enough to judge whether your sensibility matches their project before any other contact.

Visitors leave slow pages, so portfolio images should be resized to the size they display at and compressed to a modest file size. Light sharpening for screen output keeps them crisp after resizing. Raw files are huge and browsers cannot display them.

Photographers often have emotional attachments to images because of the difficulty of the shot, the significance of the moment, or the time invested in post-processing. An outside viewer responds only to what is actually present in the image, making their assessment of relative quality more objective.
