Architecture Photography Quiz: Test Your Knowledge

Tilting the camera upward to include the full height of a building places the sensor at an angle to the vertical walls, causing lines that are parallel in reality to converge toward a vanishing point above the frame. This convergence is called keystoning.

Most lenses are sharpest about two to three stops down from their widest aperture, around f/8 to f/11, which also gives enough depth of field for a building front to back. Wide apertures soften the corners, and at f/22 or smaller, diffraction softens the whole image.

A tilt-shift lens can slide (shift) its optics up or down while the camera stays level. Keeping the sensor parallel to the building keeps vertical lines straight, and the shift moves the frame up to include the top. A fisheye exaggerates distortion rather than correcting it.

Blue hour delivers a deep, even sky with no harsh shadows, and artificial building lights are on and balanced with ambient sky brightness. The combination of warm artificial light against the cool blue sky creates a distinctive, visually rich palette that is characteristic of architectural photography.

A tripod allows long exposures, so you can keep base ISO for clean files and small apertures such as f/8 to f/11 for depth of field, even in dim interiors. It also holds the exact framing needed for bracketing and for keeping vertical lines straight. Distance and camera weight are not the reason.

A single exposure cannot simultaneously hold detail in a bright window and a relatively dim interior. Bracketing a series of exposures from correct for the interior to correct for the exterior provides the raw material for a blend that renders both zones correctly.

Without a human figure for reference, the viewer has no way to judge the true scale of a building or space from a photograph alone. A recognizable person in the frame immediately establishes whether the ceiling is three meters or thirty meters high.

Architecture photos depend on straight, parallel lines, so correcting perspective and lens distortion is the key edit. Wide lenses used in tight spaces add barrel distortion, and tilting the camera makes vertical lines converge, both of which make buildings look like they are leaning or bowing.
