Double Exposure Photography Quiz

A double exposure combines two separate images that have been recorded either on the same frame of film or blended in post-processing. Each source image contributes its tones to the result, and dark areas in one image allow the other to show through.

Film records an image wherever light reaches it during an exposure. Returning the shutter to its cocked position without advancing the film keeps the same section of film in the gate, so a second exposure adds a new image on top of the existing latent image.

In additive blending, dark areas in one image have low brightness values that contribute little to the combined result. A silhouette's dark interior becomes a window through which the second image is visible, while the bright outline areas of the silhouette dominate.

Screen blending mode inverts both layer values, multiplies them together, then inverts the result. Dark areas become transparent and bright areas dominate, which precisely mimics the additive mixing behavior of two overlapping projected images or double-exposed film frames.

Textures, foliage, and landscapes contain varied tones spread across the frame, which fill the dark interior of a silhouette with detail and visual interest. Another portrait or solid color provides too little variation, and a solid black contributes nothing to the blend.

Multiple exposure mode holds the camera in a special state between frames: it records a first exposure, retains it in buffer memory, then captures a second exposure and blends them according to the selected blending method before writing the result as a single file.

In additive blending, bright areas override dark ones. If both images are bright throughout, every region adds brightness to brightness and the result clips to white with no visible structure from either source. One image needs clear dark areas to serve as the canvas for the other.

Digital post-processing provides independent control over each layer's opacity, position, scale, and masking. In-camera blending applies a fixed algorithm to full-frame exposures without the ability to reposition, scale, or selectively reveal one layer over another.

Fine art and conceptual photography treat the image as a constructed statement rather than a record of observed reality. Double exposure serves this purpose by combining unrelated subjects into a single image that carries meaning neither could convey alone.

Additive blending accumulates brightness from both images. Two correctly exposed images combined additively without compensation produce a result approximately one stop brighter than either source, pushing highlights into clipping and washing out tonal separation.
