Food Photography Quiz

Burgers and sandwiches are built in layers, and their appeal is the stack of bun, filling, and toppings seen from the side. A camera at eye level or slightly above shows those layers and the height. Top-down hides everything under the bun.

Foods that are shallow, wide, or arranged in a pattern, such as a pizza or flat salad, present their most visually informative surface when viewed directly from above. This angle also removes depth perspective, flattening the composition into a graphic arrangement of colors and shapes.

Light from behind the food skims across its surface and catches edges, revealing texture like crumbs and grains and making glazes and sauces shine. It also lights up steam and drinks so they glow. Front light is what flattens texture.

Real ice melts within minutes under hot studio lighting, changing its shape and producing unwanted water. Acrylic or resin ice substitutes maintain their form indefinitely, allowing the time needed for careful composition, lighting, and styling adjustments.

Water droplets bead and evaporate quickly under studio lighting. Mixing glycerin with water dramatically slows evaporation and creates droplets that hold their shape for extended periods, giving the photographer time to compose and light the shot properly.

The hero is the main item or ingredient the photo is about, the one that gets the best placement, light, and focus. Garnishes and props are there to support it. Food stylists often prepare a separate, perfect version just for the shot.

Placing a smaller plate in the same position fills the same proportion of the frame as a larger plate would, but the food occupying that plate takes up a greater fraction of the plate's surface, making portions look more generous relative to the serving vessel.

Tethering sends each capture directly to a computer display, allowing the photographer and any clients or art directors present to evaluate composition, color, and focus at full size in real time, rather than reviewing a small screen after the fact.

Small bright highlights on a sauce show that its surface is wet and glossy, which reads as fresh and just served. Without them, sauces look dull and dried out. Too many large reflections can make food look greasy, so they are controlled with light placement.

A white foam core board or reflector bounces some of the main light back into the shadow side, lightening it without adding another lamp. A black card does the opposite, absorbing light and deepening shadows. A mirror throws back a hard, bright spot rather than soft fill.
