How To Move Your Lightroom Catalog And Photos

Moving your Lightroom catalog and photos to a new drive—whether upgrading to a faster SSD, freeing up space, or transferring to a new computer—requires careful handling to maintain the connection between your catalog and image files. Done correctly, the process is straightforward and preserves all your editing work.

Understanding Lightroom’s File Structure

Lightroom stores information in two separate locations:

  • The catalog file (.lrcat) – A database containing all your edits, metadata, keywords, collections, and the locations of your photos. This is where your editing work lives.
  • Your actual photo files – The RAW files, JPEGs, and other images stored wherever you originally placed them. Lightroom references these files but doesn’t move or modify them during normal editing.

When moving to a new location, you need to handle both components properly to avoid “missing file” errors where Lightroom can’t find your photos.

Moving Your Photo Library

You have two options for moving your photos:

Option 1: Move through Lightroom (Recommended)

  1. In the Library module, open the Folders panel on the left
  2. Right-click the folder you want to move
  3. Select “Show Parent Folder” if needed to see the full path
  4. Drag the folder to its new location within Lightroom’s folder panel

This method updates the catalog’s file references automatically, preventing missing file issues.

Option 2: Move outside Lightroom, then reconnect

  1. Copy your photo folders to the new location using Finder (Mac) or Explorer (Windows)
  2. Open Lightroom—folders will show question marks indicating missing files
  3. Right-click a missing folder and select “Find Missing Folder”
  4. Navigate to the new location and select the folder
  5. Repeat for each top-level folder

Moving Your Catalog

To move your catalog file to a new drive:

  1. Close Lightroom completely
  2. Locate your catalog file (default location is in your Pictures folder, in a “Lightroom” subfolder)
  3. Copy the entire Lightroom folder, which includes the .lrcat file, .lrcat-data folder, and any preview files
  4. Paste to your new location
  5. Double-click the .lrcat file in the new location to open it in Lightroom

Lightroom will now use the catalog from its new location. You can delete the old catalog once you’ve verified everything works correctly.

Transferring to a New Computer

When moving to a new computer, follow these steps:

  1. Copy your entire photo library to the new computer, maintaining the same folder structure
  2. Copy your Lightroom catalog folder to the new computer
  3. Install Lightroom on the new computer
  4. Open the catalog file on the new computer
  5. If your photos are stored at a different path, use “Find Missing Folder” to reconnect them

For the smoothest transition, try to maintain identical folder paths on both computers. If your photos were at “D:\Photos” on the old computer, placing them at “D:\Photos” on the new one means Lightroom will find them automatically.

Best Practices

  • Back up first – Before any major move, back up both your catalog and photos
  • Keep catalog and photos separate – Store your catalog on a fast internal drive (SSD preferred) and photos on larger external storage if needed
  • Don’t move files while Lightroom is open – Always close Lightroom before moving catalog files through your operating system
  • Use Lightroom to move photos when possible – This keeps file references intact automatically
