Photo Editing Quiz: Lightroom and Post Processing

Post-processing can enhance a good capture, but it cannot fundamentally fix poor exposure, missed focus, or bad composition. Editing decisions that seem small, like getting exposure within range at capture, determine how much latitude you have later.

Non-destructive editing keeps the original file intact and stores adjustments as a set of instructions applied on top of it. You can undo, modify, or delete any adjustment at any stage without degrading the underlying pixel data.

The exposure slider in post-processing applies a global brightness shift to all tones in the image. It is useful for correcting a slightly off capture but cannot recover detail in areas that were completely clipped at the moment of exposure.

Increasing contrast separates bright and dark areas further apart, giving an image punch and definition. Decreasing it compresses the range toward middle gray, producing a flatter, softer, or more cinematic look depending on context.

White balance can be changed after the shot in editing software. RAW files allow this with no loss because white balance is stored as a setting rather than baked in; JPEGs can also be corrected, though with less latitude. It is not locked once you press the shutter.

Cropping removes parts of the frame, so it changes what is included and where the subject sits: that is composition. It cannot fix exposure, noise or color, and it throws away pixels, so heavy crops cost resolution.

Sharpening enhances edge microcontrast to compensate for the slight softness introduced by sensor anti-aliasing filters and lens diffraction. Too little produces a slightly soft result; too much creates obvious artifacts along every edge.

Oversharpening boosts microcontrast so aggressively that bright outlines appear on one side of every edge and dark bands on the other. These halos are more distracting than the original softness and signal that the image was over-processed.

Noise reduction works by smoothing small random variations between pixels, and fine texture such as hair, fabric and foliage is made of small variations too. The stronger the setting, the more of that real detail gets smeared along with the noise. It does not add resolution or improve color.

Presets apply a collection of saved adjustments in one click, giving an image a consistent look or aesthetic as a starting point. They are not finished results: refining them to suit each image's specific exposure and color is always necessary.

Color grading shifts hues, saturation and the color of shadows and highlights across the whole image. Those choices set the mood, change the tonal feel and define a recognizable style all at once, which is why every listed effect applies.

During post-processing, the histogram shows whether an adjustment has shifted tones into clipping at either end. Moving sliders while watching the histogram prevents the over-brightening or over-darkening that is easy to miss on a calibrated monitor.

Export settings determine the file format, color space, compression quality, and pixel dimensions of the output. Each of these choices affects whether the file is appropriate for web display, print output, or further editing in another application.

Every editing decision, from color grading to cropping, should serve what the image is trying to say. Editing that calls attention to itself or contradicts the mood of the original capture works against rather than for the photograph.

Skilled editing removes distractions and reinforces the image's mood without announcing itself. When processing is obvious, the viewer is thinking about the editing rather than responding to the photograph itself.
