Newborn Photography Quiz

Newborns are most pliable and sleep most deeply in the first two weeks of life, when their bodies are still accustomed to the curled positions of the womb. After about two weeks, muscle tone increases and the deep sleep needed for posed work becomes harder to achieve.

A newborn's core body temperature drops rapidly when clothing is removed, which causes discomfort and waking. Raising the room temperature to around 27 to 29 degrees Celsius compensates for the loss of clothing insulation and allows undressed posing without distressing the baby.

For a single newborn, f/2.8 to f/4 keeps the whole small face, from lashes to lips, in focus while still softening the background. At f/1.2 the slice of sharp focus is too thin at close range, and f/5.6 to f/11 brings more of the background into focus.

Some poses require a spotter to support parts of the baby's body that cannot be safely self-supported. Two separate frames are taken: one showing the pose with the spotter's hands in position, and one without, so the hands can be removed in the composited result.

Soft light from a large window or softbox wraps gently around a newborn's face with smooth shadows, which flatters delicate skin. It is also calm and constant, so it does not wake or startle the baby the way direct flash can.

In focus stacking, each frame should differ only in where focus falls. Changing aperture changes the depth of field and exposure from frame to frame, so the sharp slices do not overlap evenly and the blend can show bands or halos. Keep the aperture fixed and move only the focus.

Newborns cannot support their own heads or control their bodies in any way. Every posed position requires an adult to be within immediate reach to prevent any possibility of the baby rolling or shifting into an unsafe position during the fractions of a second between frames.

Lifestyle newborn photography captures the baby in the actual context of family life: in the parents' bed, being held, feeding, or sleeping in familiar surroundings. The emphasis is on authentic family moments rather than constructed studio poses.

Continuous lights give a steady glow with no sudden burst, so a sleeping newborn is less likely to startle. You also see exactly how the light falls before you take the picture. They are usually dimmer than flash, so the trade is a slower shutter speed or higher ISO.

A custom white balance from a gray card tells the camera exactly what neutral looks like under your light, so skin tones come out true. Shooting raw lets you click on the gray card in editing instead. A guessed or overly warm setting exaggerates the redness or yellowness newborn skin often has.
