Pet Photography Quiz: Test Your Knowledge

Photographing from the animal's eye level creates a perspective that shows the pet as an equal in its own environment rather than a small object viewed from above. The eye contact and close perspective produce the most engaging and emotionally resonant pet portraits.

Active pets move quickly and unpredictably, so 1/500 second or faster is needed to freeze running, jumping or a shaking head. At 1/60 or 1/125 second their paws and ears blur. Image stabilization does not help here, since it only reduces camera shake, not subject movement.

A sudden burst of direct flash startles many pets, and some will flinch or avoid the camera afterward. It also reflects off the reflective layer at the back of many animals' eyes, producing glowing eyes that are harder to fix than human red-eye. Window light or bounced flash avoids both problems.

A large window gives soft, directional light that flatters fur and puts catchlights in the eyes. It is silent and constant, so it does not startle the animal the way a flash can. Overhead fluorescent light is flat and can add a green cast.

Dogs have limited attention spans and a session that extends too long produces diminishing returns as the animal becomes tired, distracted, or uncooperative. Short sessions with breaks maintain the dog's engagement and produce better-quality responses throughout.

Viewers look at the eyes first, so they must be sharp, just as in human portraits. With a pet's long muzzle, focusing on the nose at a wide aperture can leave the eyes soft. Use eye detection or place a single focus point on the nearest eye.

Black fur reflects very little light, so at a normal exposure it records as a near-black shape with its texture lost in the shadows. Adding about half to one stop of exposure lifts the fur out of the deepest shadows so its texture shows, as long as bright areas around the pet do not clip. Underexposing would bury the detail further.

Continuous AF keeps refocusing as a pet runs toward or away from you, and eye detection keeps that focus on the eye. Single-shot AF locks focus once, so a moving animal falls out of focus before the frame is taken.
