Photography Competition Quiz – Entry and Judging Criteria

Judges evaluate the photograph itself, and disqualification for rule violations occurs before evaluation even begins. A technically outstanding image submitted in the wrong file format, at the wrong resolution, or in the wrong category receives no consideration regardless of its visual quality.

Judges view hundreds of entries, often spending only a few seconds per image in initial screening. An image that does not create an immediate visual or emotional response in those first seconds is unlikely to progress to deeper evaluation, regardless of technical quality or narrative depth.

Light is the foundation of every image. Hard light creates sharp shadows and contrast; soft light wraps around and minimizes wrinkles. Knowing how to read light and position yourself or modify it is more important than any technical setting.

Entering many similar images dilutes the selection rather than increasing the chances of a winner. A single entry that is exceptionally strong, technically sound, and distinctive within the category creates a clearer impression than several adequate entries covering similar ground.

RAW is the sensor's raw output before any camera processing. It contains more color and tonal information than JPEG, giving you flexibility in post-processing. RAW files require software to view and process, but they preserve detail that a JPEG would discard.

A title that tries too hard to be clever draws attention to the wordplay rather than deepening the viewer's engagement with the image. A thoughtful title that adds a layer of meaning, confirms the subject, or invites reflection can strengthen the impression; an arbitrary or descriptive default like Untitled adds nothing.

Color in photography is powerful because it carries mood and emotion. Warm colors advance and energize; cool colors recede and calm. Controlling and balancing color in your image is a key tool for directing how the viewer feels.

Competitions attract many entries from the same genre, and judges see dozens of images that cover well-worn territory in conventional ways. An image that approaches a familiar subject from an unexpected angle, captures an unusual moment, or applies the photographer's own distinctive vision stands out immediately in that context.

The discipline of selecting, preparing, and presenting work for an external evaluator develops the editorial judgment and self-awareness that improve future image-making. Detailed feedback from judges, when available, identifies blind spots that are difficult to recognise from inside your own practice.

Some competitions include broad licence grants in their terms that allow the organisers to use submitted images in marketing, merchandise, or future events without additional compensation. Reading these terms before entering ensures you understand what rights you are granting by participating.
