Telephoto Lens Quiz – Test Your Knowledge of Long Lenses

A telephoto lens forms its image at a long focal length by optical magnification of the scene. Objects at different distances from the camera are all magnified proportionally, which makes distant objects appear larger and compresses the apparent depth between near and far elements.

The reciprocal rule says the slowest safe handheld shutter speed is about 1 divided by the focal length. For a 200mm lens on full frame that is 1/200 second. On a crop sensor you would also multiply by the crop factor, so the same lens would need about 1/300 second.

A longer lens magnifies the scene, and it magnifies any tiny movement of the camera by the same amount. A slight tremble that is invisible at 24mm becomes an obvious smear at 400mm. That is why longer focal lengths need faster shutter speeds or stabilization.

Each stop of stabilization doubles the usable shutter time. Starting from 1/200 second, five doublings give 1/100, 1/50, 1/25, about 1/12, and about 1/6 second. Stabilization only counters camera shake; a moving subject will still blur at that speed.

A telephoto lens narrows the view to a single peak, tree, or ridge, cutting out everything else. Shooting from far away also makes distant layers like hills or mountain ranges appear stacked together. The result is a simpler, more graphic composition than a wide view.

Atmospheric haze is moisture, dust, and other particles in the air between the camera and a distant subject. A telephoto lens looks through a lot of that air, so distant subjects lose contrast and look soft and pale. It is not a lens defect, and it happens in any climate.

On a solid tripod there is no hand shake to correct. Some stabilization systems then react to their own tiny movements or to small vibrations and nudge the image, causing blur. Many newer lenses detect a tripod automatically, but turning stabilization off is the safe default.

A teleconverter sits between the lens and camera and multiplies the focal length, so a 300mm lens becomes 420mm with a 1.4x or 600mm with a 2x. The cost is light: a 1.4x loses one stop and a 2x loses two stops. Autofocus usually gets slower, not faster.

At 400mm and beyond, the magnification makes any subject movement very visible. An animal running, a bird taking off, or wings beating need about 1/1000 to 1/2000 second or faster to freeze. Stabilization only reduces camera shake and does nothing to stop the animal's motion.

When the sun heats roads, sand, or rock, the air above rises and mixes with cooler air. Light bends as it passes through those layers, so distant subjects look wavy and soft. A telephoto lens looks through a long stretch of that air, which makes the effect much stronger, especially at midday.
