Event Photography Quiz

At events, people move unpredictably and moments pass quickly, so a shutter speed fast enough to stop motion, often 1/125 to 1/250 second or faster for people, matters most. A blurred moment cannot be fixed later, while color and file choices can be adjusted.

A 24-70mm zoom covers wide shots of a room, group photos and tighter candids without a lens change. That range handles most event situations, where moments do not wait for a lens swap. A 14-24mm is too wide for portraits, and a 100-400mm is too long for most indoor rooms.

Bouncing flash off a ceiling or wall spreads it into a broad, soft source, so faces get even light without the harsh shadows and flat look of direct flash. It also blends better with the room's own light. The surface should be white or neutral so it does not tint skin.

Event venues often mix tungsten, LED, daylight and colored lights, which makes white balance hard to get right in the camera. A raw file stores the sensor data before white balance is applied, so you can set it accurately afterward without losing quality. A JPEG has white balance baked in.

Speakers walk, lean and gesture, which changes their distance from the camera. Continuous autofocus keeps adjusting so the face stays sharp. Focus locked once at the start, or zone focus, drifts as soon as they move.

Venue and setup shots can only be taken before guests arrive. Once the event begins, this opportunity is gone. Capturing the space, table arrangements, decorative details, and signage while the room is empty provides context that makes the event coverage complete.

Indoor venues are dim, so without flash you usually need ISO 800 to 6400 to keep a shutter speed fast enough for people, even with a wide aperture. ISO 100 to 400 suits daylight. Modern sensors keep noise acceptable across this range.

A wide-angle lens used close to the crowd from a low angle takes in several dancers and exaggerates the nearest ones, which makes the scene feel immersive and full of energy. Tight headshots and telephoto compression isolate individuals and lose the sense of a packed floor.

Events involve many people and moments happening simultaneously. A shot list agreed upon with the client ensures that all key personnel, speakers, award recipients, and significant moments are documented rather than left to chance or memory during a busy event.

Arriving early allows the photographer to assess the lighting, identify the best positions, note potential problem areas, and capture venue and setup shots before guests arrive and claim those positions. Arriving with guests leaves no time for this preparation.
