Flat Lay Photography Quiz | Test Your Knowledge

A flat lay is defined by the camera being positioned directly above the subject and pointed straight down, parallel to the surface. This eliminates perspective distortion and presents all elements at equal distance from the lens, producing a graphic, map-like composition.

A window is a large source coming from one side, so its light is soft but still directional. That gives gentle shadows that show the texture and shape of objects lying flat, while staying clean. It does not remove shadows entirely, and that is what keeps the objects from looking flat.

In a flat lay, the hero item is the main subject, usually given the most prominent spot. The other props are arranged around it, smaller or quieter in color, to support its story rather than compete with it.

White, off-white and neutral backgrounds let objects of any color stand out and keep the frame clean. They also take text overlays well and match easily across a series. Bold patterns and neon colors compete with the items and limit which props work.

Holding a camera level over a flat lay by hand is hard. A tripod with a horizontal arm holds the camera directly over the surface, and the grid overlay or a level shows whether the scene's edges line up with the frame. If the camera tilts, the layout looks skewed and objects distort.

Negative space, the empty area around and between objects, gives the eye somewhere to rest and makes each item easier to see. Without it a flat lay looks crowded and the main subject gets lost. It also leaves room for text when needed.

Props in a flat lay provide context that explains or enhances the main subject's purpose or identity, add color and visual variety, and fill compositional space in a way that supports rather than competes with the primary object.

Flat lays are shot from above at a fairly short distance, and the props have height, so f/5.6 to f/11 keeps the whole layout sharp. At f/1.4 much of it would be soft, and f/32 loses sharpness to diffraction.

The rule of odds suggests that groups of three, five or seven items look more natural than even numbers. With an odd number, the eye cannot pair items off neatly, so it keeps moving and the arrangement feels less static. It is a guideline, not a law.

Depth in an overhead shot comes from cues the eye reads: objects overlapping, items stacked to different heights so they cast shadows, and contrasting textures. Making everything the same size and evenly spaced flattens the picture further.
