Pinhole Photography Quiz – Physics and Exposure Basics

A lens bends light and focuses it onto the sensor. Different lenses bend light at different angles, giving different fields of view. Prime lenses (fixed focal length) tend to be sharper and faster; zoom lenses offer flexibility and convenience.

Light is the foundation of every image. Hard light creates sharp shadows and contrast; soft light wraps around and minimizes wrinkles. Knowing how to read light and position yourself or modify it is more important than any technical setting.

Very small apertures cause diffraction, where light waves bend as they pass through the opening and spread across adjacent points on the image surface. Below an optimal pinhole size, diffraction softness exceeds the geometric softness that a larger pinhole would produce, and image sharpness decreases despite the smaller opening.

Depth of field shrinks as you focus closer to the camera. At close distances or macro ratios, the in-focus zone becomes razor-thin, even at small apertures. This is why close-up photographers use focus stacking and focusing rails to build a sharp composite, and why they avoid wide apertures in macro work.

Pinhole cameras have effective apertures typically between f/100 and f/300, hundreds of times smaller than even the smallest aperture on a conventional lens. In bright sun, exposures of several seconds are common; in subdued light or indoor conditions, they may extend to many minutes.

A pinhole exposure lasting many seconds accumulates the light emitted by a stationary subject throughout the full duration, while a moving subject is only in each position for a fraction of the exposure. The moving subject contributes a faint, spread-out impression to the image that reads as a ghost or disappears entirely if moving fast enough.
