Posing & Directing Quiz

Light is the foundation of every image. Hard light creates sharp shadows and contrast; soft light wraps around and minimizes wrinkles. Knowing how to read light and position yourself or modify it is more important than any technical setting.

Shooting from slightly above the subject's eye level compresses the forehead slightly while emphasising the eyes and defining the lower face. A low angle has the opposite effect: it foreshortens the top of the head and makes the lower jaw appear larger.

Extending the chin forward and slightly downward stretches the skin under the jaw, reducing the appearance of a double chin and sharpening the jawline. This small adjustment is most useful in close or medium-distance portraits where the jaw is clearly visible.

Turning the shoulders fully toward the camera presents the widest view of the chest and communicates a direct, confident posture. Angled shoulders narrow the body but carry a more casual or guarded connotation depending on context.

Breaking the body into distinct curves by shifting the hip and bending the arms creates visual variation along the vertical axis. A relaxed, asymmetric pose with weight on one leg introduces movement and energy that a symmetrical, square stance does not.

Straight, locked joints, whether elbows, knees, or wrists, create stiff, angular shapes that read as tense or awkward in photographs. Introducing a slight bend at every available joint softens the silhouette and produces a more relaxed, natural appearance.

A lower camera position looking up at the subject exaggerates perspective convergence toward the feet, making legs appear to extend further toward the camera than the upper body. This elongation effect becomes stronger the lower the camera is placed.

Placing the subject at an angle to the camera so the shoulders are turned 45 degrees removes the widest dimension from the frame. The body now occupies less horizontal width, producing a slimmer silhouette than a full front-on stance would.

Flat or clenched hands create conspicuous shapes that compete with the face for attention. Relaxed hands with soft, slightly curved fingers, sometimes called ballet hands, stay subordinate to the overall portrait and do not introduce visual tension at the edges of the frame.

Directing uses verbal prompts, movement instructions, or conversation to produce genuine emotional states and natural expressions rather than held poses. Posing tells the subject exactly where to place each body part; directing invites the subject to move and feel something, then captures the result.
