Architecture & Real Estate Quiz

Viewers know that walls stand straight up, so any lean in vertical lines reads at once as a tilted camera rather than a feature of the building. Keeping verticals truly vertical, with a level camera, a shift lens, or correction in post, is the first rule of architectural work.

A tilt-shift lens can slide its optics parallel to the sensor. With the camera kept level, shifting the lens up includes the top of a building while vertical lines stay parallel, correcting perspective in camera. Tilting the lens also lets the plane of focus be angled.

Showing three walls, two side walls and the ceiling or floor, gives the viewer a three-dimensional sense of the room's volume, scale, and proportions. Shooting straight at a single wall produces a flat, dimensionless record that fails to convey how the space actually feels.

Tilting the camera upward to include the full height of a building places the sensor at an angle to the vertical walls, causing lines that are parallel in reality to converge toward a vanishing point above the frame. This keystoning effect is corrected by keeping the sensor plane parallel to the facade or by post-processing.

At twilight the sky's brightness comes close to that of the building's interior and exterior lights, so both can be captured in one exposure. The deep blue sky contrasts with warm windows and makes the property look inviting. Noon gives harsh shadows, and full night turns the sky black.

Interior spaces often present a high contrast ratio between bright windows and relatively dim room surfaces. HDR blending or flash exposure balancing captures detail at both ends of this range, making the room look habitable rather than silhouetted against blown-out windows.

A camera at roughly chest height, about 4 to 5 feet, sees a room close to how a person experiences it, with furniture and walls in natural proportion. From standing eye level the view looks down on furniture tops and shows too much floor, while floor level makes the ceiling dominate.

Reflections on glass are partly polarized light, most strongly when the window is viewed at an angle. A polarizing filter rotated to block that light reduces the reflections, so the view through the window shows. It does not turn glass black.

Tungsten bulbs give a strong orange cast. Turning them off removes that light, or an orange gel on the flash makes it match the tungsten, so one white balance setting suits the whole room. Auto white balance cannot neutralize two different colors of light at once.

A wide lens, around 16 mm on a full frame camera, fits much more of a room from a single spot and stretches the apparent space between near and far objects. Rooms look larger and more open, which is what listings want. Wide lenses actually tend to show more distortion, not less.
