Car Photography Quiz | Test Your Knowledge

In the hour around sunrise or sunset, warm, low-angled light rakes across a car's bodywork, emphasizing curves and creating long reflections along the panels. Overhead midday sun creates flat, unflattering reflections and harsh shadows that obscure the vehicle's form.

Car surfaces are highly reflective, and reflections in polished paint magnify any surface contamination. Dust specks invisible to a casual observer become obvious blemishes in a large-format image, and fingerprints create cloudy areas that distort reflections and diminish paint quality.

A low camera position looking up at the vehicle creates a sense of scale and power by placing the car against the sky and making the wheel arches and lower bodywork dominant. A high position looking down has the opposite effect, making the car appear smaller.

A polarizing filter blocks much of the glare reflected from paint and glass when you view them at an angle. Rotating it controls how much reflection shows, revealing the paint color and the shape of the body. Direct flash and bright white walls add more reflections, not fewer.

The environment around a vehicle contributes directly to the mood the image creates: an industrial setting communicates utility; a coastal road communicates freedom; a clean studio backdrop communicates premium quality. The background is an active part of the image's message.

A rolling shot is captured by a camera operator in a separate vehicle moving alongside the subject car at a matching speed. A relatively slow shutter speed blurs the background while the car, moving at the same speed as the camera, remains relatively sharp.

At 1/30 to 1/80 second, the road and background move far enough during the exposure to streak, which shows speed, while the car, moving with the camera, stays sharp. Faster speeds freeze the background and the car looks parked. Much slower speeds let bumps and vibration blur the car too.

A 35-70mm range shows a car's side profile with natural proportions from a practical working distance. Very wide lenses used up close stretch the nearest parts of the car, and a fisheye bends its body lines. A super telephoto would need you to stand very far away.

Clouds turn the sky into one huge soft light source. Shiny paint reflects that as a smooth gradient instead of the sharp hot spots and harsh reflections of direct sun, so the car's lines and color show clearly.

Selective adjustments applied only to the car's paint, using a mask that excludes the background, windows, and other surfaces, allow independent control of the saturation, contrast, and clarity of the bodywork without affecting the rest of the image.
