Photography Ethics Quiz – Test Your Photography Knowledge

Photography law governs what is technically permitted; ethics asks whether exercising that permission is the right choice given the people and context involved. Legal permission to photograph someone in a public space does not mean that every possible use of that image is ethically appropriate.

Insisting on a legal right to photograph someone who has clearly communicated that they object treats the photograph as more important than the person. Respecting the refusal acknowledges the subject's dignity and produces a cleaner ethical record, even if a potentially interesting image is lost.

Photography of vulnerable people can serve to build understanding and empathy, or it can reduce individuals to symbols of suffering for the photographer's gain. Asking this question shifts the frame from what the photographer gets to what the photograph does for or to the subject.

Children cannot give informed consent, and adults who are responsible for their wellbeing have both legal and moral standing over how images of them are made and used. Seeking parental permission ensures that the child's interests are represented by someone qualified to consider them.

Asking permission shifts the relationship from observer and observed to two people who have acknowledged each other. The subject who agrees becomes a participant rather than a subject, and the resulting portrait often carries a quality of mutual engagement that candid observation cannot produce.

Cartier-Bresson, Maier, and Winogrand each built major bodies of work through observation of strangers in public without direction or staged setups. Their work demonstrates the documentary and artistic possibilities of candid photography as a sustained practice.

The photographer holds the camera, chooses the frame, and decides whether to press the shutter. The subject has no reciprocal authority over those decisions. Recognising this asymmetry encourages more careful consideration of how the photograph uses the subject's image.

Photography ethics is not a fixed set of rules with clear outcomes but a practice of deliberate consideration: asking who is affected, what the image will be used for, and whether the benefits justify any costs to the subject. It requires judgement in situations where no universal rule applies.
