Nature and Wildlife Photography Quiz: Masterclass Lesson 4

Most bird and mammal subjects are small enough at typical distances that shorter focal lengths cannot fill the frame with useful detail. A 300mm lens is the practical minimum for providing enough subject magnification to produce images where the animal dominates the frame.

Moving animals constantly change distance from the camera. Continuous autofocus (AF-C or AI Servo) keeps refocusing as long as the button is held. Single shot autofocus locks focus once, so a moving animal quickly falls out of focus.

Photographing from eye level with the animal places the camera at the subject's physical height, creating an image that shows the world from the animal's perspective. It produces a more intimate, respectful view than shooting downward from standing height, which diminishes the subject.

Leaving space in front of the animal, in the direction it looks or moves, gives it room to look or move into. That lead room makes the composition feel balanced and natural. Placing it with its face close to the frame edge makes the image feel cramped.

A static animal in a neutral setting documents its existence but reveals nothing about how it lives. Images that capture specific behaviors, feeding, conflict, courtship, or play, tell a story about the animal as a living participant in its environment.

In the first hours after sunrise and the last hours before sunset, low-angled light produces warm tones and long shadows that model three-dimensional subjects more dramatically than the flat overhead light of midday. Wildlife is also more active during these periods, increasing opportunities for behavior photography.

Leave no trace requires that the photographer's presence leaves the location in the same physical state as before arrival. This includes not disturbing vegetation, not leaving equipment behind, and not baiting or habituating wild animals in ways that alter their natural behavior.

Playback of bird vocalizations triggers territorial and alarm responses that interrupt normal activity. During nesting season this can cause a bird to abandon its nest. The short-term benefit of getting closer does not justify the potential harm to breeding success.

Animals can move suddenly and quickly, so a short exposure is needed to stop the motion. 1/1000 second or faster freezes most running animals and birds. 1/250 second often leaves visible blur in legs, wings and heads.

Wildlife behaves naturally when it does not perceive a predator or threat. A hide or blind breaks up the human silhouette and conceals movement, allowing animals to approach, relax, and engage in normal behavior at close range.
