Landscape Photography Quiz: Masterclass Lesson 2

The hyperfocal distance is the focus distance that gives the most depth of field for a given lens and aperture. When focused there, everything from about half that distance to infinity looks acceptably sharp. It depends on focal length and aperture, so it is not a fixed lens limit.

Golden hour is the short period just after sunrise and just before sunset. The sun is low, so its light travels through more atmosphere and comes out warm, soft and angled, with long shadows that show texture. Midday sun is harsh and comes from overhead.

Blue hour is the twilight period when the sun is just below the horizon, before sunrise and after sunset. There is no direct sun, only scattered skylight, which gives the sky a deep blue color. Artificial lights in the scene often stand out warmly against it.

A strong foreground element such as rocks, flowers or a path gives the eye a starting point. It adds depth and a sense of scale, and leads the viewer from the near part of the scene into the distance. Without it, wide landscapes can look empty in the bottom of the frame.

A polarizing filter blocks light that has become polarized by bouncing off surfaces or scattering in the sky. That darkens blue sky, cuts glare from water and leaves, and lets the true color of surfaces show, so saturation rises. It does not add a color cast or create bokeh.

A long exposure allows the sensor to record the full path of moving water rather than a single frozen moment. The result averages the turbulence into a continuous smooth surface, giving waterfalls and rivers an ethereal quality that does not appear in short exposures.

Exposure bracketing captures a set of frames at different exposure values around the metered setting. It provides insurance when lighting is uncertain and supplies the raw material for HDR blending or for choosing the best single exposure in post-processing.

Image stabilization works by detecting shake and moving lens or sensor elements to cancel it. On a solid tripod there is no shake to correct, and some systems can then introduce small movements of their own, softening the image. Many newer systems detect a tripod, but turning stabilization off avoids the problem.

Apertures around f/8 to f/11 give deep depth of field while staying near the sharpest settings of most lenses. Opening wider makes depth of field too shallow for front to back sharpness. Stopping down to f/22 or beyond adds diffraction, which softens fine detail.

Layering arranges a scene into distinct foreground, midground and background planes. Each layer overlaps the next, and that overlap gives a flat photo a sense of three dimensional depth. Leading lines also add depth, but by guiding the eye along a path rather than stacking planes.
