Night and Low-Light Photography Quiz: Masterclass Lesson 7

Blue hour begins when the sun drops far enough below the horizon that direct illumination is gone but scattered skylight remains, producing a uniform deep blue. The window is short because twilight progresses continuously: roughly 20 to 40 minutes for the most usable blue-hour quality.

Earth's rotation causes stars to appear to move across the frame during an exposure. Dividing 500 by the focal length in use gives an approximate maximum exposure time, in seconds, before that movement produces a visible trail rather than a point of light.

Night scenes need exposures of several seconds or longer to gather enough light at low ISO, and no one can hold a camera still for that long. A tripod keeps the camera steady through the whole exposure. Low ISO then keeps noise down and detail high.

Autofocus struggles in near darkness because it needs light and contrast. Switching to manual focus, turning on live view and magnifying a bright point such as a star or distant light lets focus be set until that point is as small and sharp as possible. The camera has no infrared focusing system for this.

A 10 to 30 second exposure is long enough for vehicles moving at normal road speeds to trace a continuous streak of headlight or tail-light color across the full width of the frame, without being so long that the trails pile up into a formless mass.

Wet streets and pavements act like mirrors. Every streetlight, sign and window reflects in them, which doubles the light and color in the frame and adds shine to dark areas. That is why rain makes night scenes more interesting rather than worse.

The Milky Way is faint, so it needs dark skies far from city light pollution. It also needs the right timing, when its bright core is above the horizon at night in that season. Moonlight brightens the sky and washes it out, so a new moon or moonless period works best.

Stars rotate around the celestial pole because Earth spins on its axis. Pointing the camera toward the pole concentrates the concentric arc trails around a single stationary point, creating the classic circular star trail composition with Polaris or the Southern Celestial Pole at the center.

Light painting moves a torch, sparkler, or other handheld light source through the air or across surfaces during a long exposure in a dark environment. The sensor records only where the light travels and what it illuminates, building up a trace of the movement across the stationary dark background.

Long-exposure noise reduction captures a dark frame of identical duration immediately after the main exposure, recording only the camera's thermal noise pattern. Subtracting it from the image removes fixed-pattern hot pixels, but the total capture time for a single image effectively doubles.
