Sunset Photography Quiz | Test Your Knowledge

Golden hour is the period shortly after sunrise and before sunset when the sun is low, so its light is warm, soft and directional. The time after sunset is twilight, often called blue hour.

The Cloudy and Shade presets assume cooler light and add warmth to compensate, which strengthens the orange and gold of a sunset. Auto white balance tends to neutralize the warm glow, and Tungsten shifts the whole scene toward blue.

Arriving early gives you time to find a composition, set up the tripod and settle on settings before the light starts changing quickly. The light before sunset is often worth shooting too. Sunset color lasts longer than 30 seconds, but the best moments still pass within minutes.

Metering from the bright sky sets the exposure to render that brightness as middle gray, which means the darker foreground receives far less light than the sensor needs to record it. The foreground records as a dark or black silhouette, which is either the desired effect or a metering mistake depending on intent.

A foreground element such as rocks, water or a tree gives the eye a near point, and with the sky as the far point, the picture reads in layers with depth. A bare sky or a centered sun on its own looks flat.

A graduated ND filter is dark at the top and clear at the bottom, so it holds back the bright sky while leaving the darker foreground untouched. That brings the two closer in brightness so both keep detail in one exposure. A neutral filter does not add color.

After the sun sets, its light travels through a much longer path of atmosphere to reach the clouds and upper sky. Blue light scatters out along the way, leaving reds, pinks and purples that light the clouds from below. That is why the strongest color often comes several minutes after sunset.

The sun's size in the frame grows in direct proportion to focal length. At 200mm or longer it becomes a large disc, especially beside a distant silhouette, while at 24mm it is a small bright point and a fisheye makes it smaller still.

Sunsets span a wide range from bright sky to dark ground. A raw file keeps more tonal data than a JPEG, so you can pull back highlights in the sky and lift shadows in the foreground without the banding and clipping a JPEG shows. White balance is still yours to set; raw does not fix it automatically.

Blue hour is the stretch of twilight after sunset, when the sun is a few degrees below the horizon and the sky turns a deep, even blue before full darkness. It happens before sunrise too. The light is soft and cool, and city lights glow warm against it.
