Shutter speed determines how long the sensor collects light. A fast shutter (like 1/1000 second) freezes motion and reduces exposure. A slow shutter (like 1 second) allows movement to blur and accumulates more light over time. It is your primary tool for controlling how motion appears in your image.

Surfers ride waves at typical beach distances of 100 to 400 metres from the shore. A telephoto focal length of 200mm or longer is necessary to fill the frame with a surfer at that distance and to isolate individual riders from the surrounding water.

Focus is the act of aligning the lens optics so that light from your subject converges on the sensor. A subject in focus appears sharp; a subject out of focus appears blurred. Choosing which part of the scene is in focus is one of your most powerful tools for guiding the viewer's eye.

A water housing is a sealed enclosure precisely shaped to fit the camera body and lens, with an optical port for the lens and controls accessible through sealed mechanisms. It allows the camera and lens to function normally while being held in or beneath the surface of the water.

Waves arrive in sets of variable size at regular intervals. An experienced surf photographer reads these intervals to predict when the best waves in a set will arrive, allowing positioning at the optimal location for the expected wave size before the set reaches the lineup.
